FAQs: Choosing the Best Mattress for You

How do I choose the right mattress for me?

Illustration of a woman considering sleep position, firmness, pressure points, temperature, partner needs and mattress supportStart with how you actually sleep. Your usual sleep position, preferred firmness, pressure points, sleeping temperature and any particular support needs can all affect which mattress feels best. If you share your bed, consider your partner’s comfort preferences as well as motion transfer and the amount of space you both need.

Keep in mind that labels such as "firm," "medium" and "plush" are only a starting point. Mattresses with the same firmness description can feel very different depending on their materials and construction. The best way to choose is to try several mattresses in your normal sleeping position and pay attention to how well your shoulders, hips and lower back feel supported.

What is the difference between memory foam, innerspring and hybrid mattresses?

The main difference is how the mattress is constructed and how that construction feels when you sleep on it. Each type can provide excellent support, but they respond to your body differently.

Memory foam mattresses use layers of foam that contour to the body and relieve pressure around areas such as the shoulders and hips. They tend to absorb movement well, which can be helpful for couples when one person moves during the night. Some sleepers love the close, cushioning feel of memory foam, while others prefer a mattress with more bounce or airflow.

Innerspring mattresses use a system of coils for support, usually with cushioning layers above them. They generally have a more traditional mattress feel, with more responsiveness and airflow than an all-foam mattress. The exact feel can vary considerably depending on the coil system and the materials used in the comfort layers.

Hybrid mattresses combine a coil support system with substantial layers of foam, latex or other cushioning materials. They're designed to offer characteristics of both types, such as the responsiveness and airflow of coils along with the pressure relief and contouring of foam.

There isn't one construction that's best for everyone. Your sleep position, preferred feel, temperature and support needs all matter. Try each type in your normal sleeping position rather than choosing by construction alone. Two mattresses that sound very similar on paper can feel surprisingly different once you lie down.

Should I choose a firm, medium or soft mattress?

The right firmness is the one that feels comfortable while keeping your body properly supported. Firmness and support are not the same thing. A soft, plush mattress can provide excellent support, while a very firm mattress isn't automatically more supportive.

Your sleep position is a good place to start. Side sleepers often prefer more cushioning around the shoulders and hips, while back sleepers may be comfortable with a medium to firmer feel that supports the natural curves of the body. Stomach sleepers often prefer enough firmness to keep the midsection from sinking too deeply.

Your body type and personal preference matter too. What feels firm to one person may feel quite different to another, and firmness ratings can vary between manufacturers and mattress designs.

Rather than choosing solely by a label, lie on the mattress in your normal sleeping position for several minutes. Pay attention to whether your shoulders and hips feel comfortable, your lower back feels supported, and your body feels relaxed rather than pressured. The right mattress should give you both comfort and support, regardless of whether the label says soft, medium or firm.

What type of mattress is best for side, back or stomach sleepers?

Your sleeping position affects where your body needs cushioning and where it needs support, so it can be a useful starting point when choosing a mattress.

Side sleepers often benefit from a mattress that allows some cushioning around the shoulders and hips. If the mattress is too firm, these areas can experience uncomfortable pressure. At the same time, the mattress should provide enough support to keep the body from sinking too deeply.

Back sleepers generally need a balance of cushioning and support. The mattress should conform enough to support the natural curve of the lower back without allowing the hips to sink excessively. Many back sleepers are comfortable on a medium to firmer mattress, although personal preference still matters.

Stomach sleepers often need a somewhat firmer surface to help prevent the hips and midsection from sinking too far into the mattress. Too much sinking can put the body in an uncomfortable position and place additional strain on the lower back.

If you change positions throughout the night, look for a mattress that feels comfortable and supportive in each of the positions you use most often. There is no single firmness or mattress type that's right for every side, back or stomach sleeper, which is why trying a mattress in your normal sleeping positions is so important.

How can I tell if a mattress has the right support?

Woman testing a mattress for comfortable spinal support and alignmentA supportive mattress should help keep your body in a comfortable, natural alignment while you sleep. When you lie down, your shoulders and hips should be able to settle into the mattress without your midsection sinking too deeply or your body feeling as though it is being pushed out of position.

Pay particular attention to your lower back, shoulders and hips. You shouldn't feel a gap where your lower back needs support, excessive pressure at your shoulders or hips, or the sensation that you're sagging toward the center of the mattress.

Remember that support and firmness are different things. A plush mattress can be very supportive if its underlying construction keeps your body properly aligned, while a firm mattress can still be uncomfortable or provide the wrong support for your body.

When testing a mattress, spend several minutes in your normal sleeping position and then change positions. You should feel comfortably supported without having to tense your muscles or continually reposition yourself to get comfortable.

What should I look for if I sleep hot?

If you tend to sleep hot, look for a mattress that allows heat to move away from your body rather than trapping it. Breathable materials, airflow through the mattress and cooling features in the comfort layers can all make a difference. In general, mattresses with coils allow more air to circulate through the interior, while some dense foam constructions can hold more body heat.

Don't rely on the word “cooling” alone. How warm a mattress feels can depend on its entire construction, including the cover, comfort layers and materials beneath them. Your sheets, mattress protector and room temperature can also affect how warm you sleep.

When trying a mattress, spend enough time on it to notice how it feels after you've been lying in one position for several minutes. If sleeping temperature is important to you, tell the Maupin's team you’re a hot sleeper so they can help you compare mattresses designed with airflow and temperature management in mind.

What should couples look for when choosing a mattress?

If you and your partner have different sleep preferences, you don’t necessarily have to compromise. Split mattress and adjustable-base systems can give each person their own side of the bed, with individualized comfort and positioning. Maupin's Mattress Gallery has split adjustable systems you can try in the showroom, and depending on the mattress and base you choose, couples can have different comfort feels, sleeping positions and other adjustable features on each side.

Even if you prefer a traditional mattress, consider each person’s sleeping position, preferred firmness, temperature and support needs. Motion isolation can be especially important if one person moves frequently during the night, while good edge support lets both sleepers comfortably use more of the mattress surface.

Most importantly, shop for the mattress together. Lie down in your normal sleeping positions, move around, adjust the bed if you're considering an adjustable system, and compare different comfort levels. Today's mattress and adjustable-base options can accommodate two very different sleepers far better than they once could, so the goal isn't simply to find a compromise. It's to find a sleep system that works well for both of you.

Do I need a box spring or foundation with my new mattress?

It depends on the mattress and the type of bed frame you have. Many newer mattresses do not require a traditional box spring, but they do need a strong, stable surface that provides the proper support. Depending on the mattress, that might be a foundation, platform bed, adjustable base or a properly supported slatted frame.

The important thing is to follow the mattress manufacturer's recommendations. Using the wrong type of foundation or having slats that are too widely spaced can affect how the mattress performs and, in some cases, may affect the warranty.

If you're keeping your existing bed frame or foundation, let the Maupin's team know what you have. They can help determine whether it will work with your new mattress or whether a different foundation would provide better support.

How should I test a mattress before buying it?

Don’t judge a mattress by sitting on the edge or lying down for thirty seconds. Lie on it the way you actually sleep and give yourself several minutes to settle in. Try your usual sleeping position, roll over a few times and pay attention to how your shoulders, hips and lower back feel.

Notice whether you feel comfortably supported or whether certain areas feel pressured or sink too deeply. Try different firmness levels even if you think you already know what you prefer. A mattress labeled "medium" or "firm" may feel quite different from another mattress with the same description.

If you share your bed, both of you should test the mattress together. Change positions and move around while your partner stays still so you can see how much motion you feel across the bed. And take your time. A mattress is something you’ll spend thousands of hours using, so a few extra minutes trying it in the showroom is time well spent.

How long does a good mattress last, and when should I replace mine?

Illustration of a woman considering replacing a worn, sagging mattress with a new mattressThere isn't a single age at which every mattress needs to be replaced. Mattress lifespan depends on its materials, construction, how it is used and how well it has held up over time. Many quality mattresses can provide years of comfortable sleep, so the condition of your mattress may tell you more than the calendar does.

Look for signs such as visible sagging or body impressions, loss of support, worn or damaged materials, or regularly waking with stiffness or discomfort that wasn't there before. Another clue can be realizing that you consistently sleep better in another bed than you do in your own.

Your comfort needs can also change over time. Changes in sleeping position, body weight or simply what feels comfortable may mean that a mattress that once worked well for you no longer does.

If you're wondering whether it's time for a replacement, compare your current mattress with several new ones in the showroom. Sometimes the difference in comfort and support becomes much easier to recognize once you have something to compare it with.
